At KC Design House, we’re deeply appreciative of the stunning countryside that surrounds our West Yorkshire showroom and workshop. This natural beauty constantly reminds us of the importance of preserving our world’s limited resources and fuels our commitment to a greener future.
When it comes to sustainability in our sector of home interiors and furnishings, quality and longevity are key. As such, we craft handmade kitchens and furniture that not only stand the test of time but also minimise our and our clients’ environmental impact. This commitment is reflected in every aspect of our work, from our meticulous manufacturing practices and detailed design process to using high-quality materials and promoting energy-efficient appliances.
We understand that sustainability is an ongoing journey rather than a final destination. It
involves taking a series of small steps that collectively make a significant impact. Here, we share how sustainability remains a cornerstone of KC Design House and the meaningful differences we aim to achieve.
Detailed Design Process
Our sustainable approach begins with our detailed and highly considered design process.
This ensures that every kitchen and piece of furniture we create is perfectly tailored to fit not only the space but also the lifestyle of our clients. So, as well as considering layout,
materials, and interior preferences, we take time to discuss how the space will be used day-to-day, as well as cooking habits, storage needs and the like. This careful planning delivers a design that’s aesthetically pleasing and highly functional. Furthermore, it helps avoid future frustrations or ‘if onlys’ and ensures long-term satisfaction.
Meticulous Manufacturing & High-Quality Materials
Our KC Exclusively made kitchens and furniture are handcrafted in our Clayton West
workshop, adjacent to our showroom. Our expert cabinet makers use a blend of modern and traditional skills to produce furniture that is robust in nature yet elegant in appearance with exemplary attention to detail. By making pieces to fit specific spaces and cutting each element to precision, we can ensure every piece of timber is maximised, reducing our overall material consumption. And, even the small amount of ‘waste’ that we produce is made good use of, with offcuts repurposed for biomass fuels and wood shavings collected by a local farmer for distribution on the land within one mile of our premises.
Regarding materials, we source these locally wherever possible to further reduce emissions and always look to partner with those who share our high-quality standards and sustainability values.
Our hardwood and sheet panels are sourced from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
certified suppliers, ensuring that the wood is harvested from forests that are responsibly
managed, environmentally conscious, socially beneficial and economically viable.
Meanwhile, we use water-based paints for our kitchens and furniture that have a much lower environmental impact than solvent-chemical-based paints whilst being durable in use and long-lasting in pigment.
Supporting the Woodland Trust
Keen to help preserve the natural materials used in our craft, we’re proud members and
regular contributors to the Woodland Trust, which has been guardians of the UK’s
woodlands for 50 years. For every handmade kitchen we create, we donate to support their vital work in protecting, restoring, and creating woodlands and trees across the UK. This initiative not only offsets our carbon footprint but also positively impacts people, wildlife, and the planet.
Timeless Design. Lasting Appeal
In a world of fast consumption, we advocate the importance of buying high-quality goods that go the distance. Our handmade kitchens are designed with timeless appeal in mind, ensuring they remain stylish and functional for decades. This approach aligns with our sustainability goals and offers our clients lasting value and satisfaction.
Furthermore, our kitchens are supported by a 25-year guarantee and benefit from our
dedicated aftercare service. This ensures that we’re on hand to help maintain your kitchen in the years following fitting, whether a replacement part, repair, or modification is needed.
Energy-Efficient Appliances & Eco-Friendly Lighting
We partner with leading brands to ensure that the appliances in our kitchens are both
durable and energy-efficient. Induction hobs, energy-optimising fridges, and boiling water taps are just a few examples of how we incorporate energy-saving technology into our designs.
Our lighting plans are equally eco-friendly, utilising and enhancing the natural light within a space wherever possible and incorporating LED lighting to reduce energy consumption.
Eco-Conscious Premises & Practices
Our commitment to sustainability extends to our West Yorkshire showroom. Powered by air source heating and featuring a Brise-Soleil exterior glass façade, the building’s design
reduces the need for air conditioning. Smart, automated LED lighting systems further
conserve energy.
We also adopt eco-friendly practices as a team, utilising composting and recycling facilities, and some team members have taken up our cycle-to-work scheme to benefit from greener commuting options.
Above all else, we don’t rest on our laurels. So, just as in every other aspect of the business, we’re always looking for ways to improve. This means we’re continually assessing how to take more offsetting and waste-cutting actions to further reduce our environmental impact and move towards a greener future.
